Mindfulness is about being present and nonjudgmentally aware of what’s going on inside and outside of your body and mind. Making a Mindfulness Box can not only be a fun ongoing project, but also a helpful way to hone your mindfulness skills and build it into a regular practice.
Mindfulness Boxes can be as simple or as complex as you like, and also as low-cost or expensive as you like. All you need to start is a box, container, bin, or basket, which you can then fill with the items of your choosing.
Here is an example of my own Mindfulness Box:

I used a medium-sized plastic bin, and it includes a notebook for free-writing, a defusion jar, a bottle of water, mints, two sensory items (a squishy strawberry and a container of sand), and some notecards with some of my favorite encouraging quotes and song lyrics.
Here is a list of ideas for your Mindfulness Box, but feel free to come up with your own ideas as well! There is complete freedom in this project, and different people may find one item more helpful than another. Whatever you choose, it’s a good idea to include items that speak to multiple senses.
- A weighted blanket
- A scented candle
- Photos of family, pets, or something else that brings you joy
- A fidget toy or stress ball
- Essential oils
- Uplifting quotes or song lyrics
- Sketch pad
- A smooth stone
- Noise-cancelling headphones
- An iPod or other device with your favorite music
